Last week's next big thing has graduated to today's "Now's Big Thing": http://www.arcticmonkeys.com/
Arctic Monkeys - "I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor"
http://www.insound.com/mp3/mp3s.php
What can be said about Sheffield's Arctic Monkeys? These kids are all about 10 years younger than me, and I have never seen this much hype and praise for a band condensed into a two week blitz. The album 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not' has been hailed as the album to save humanity. I wouldn't say that, but it is well worth the $9.00 it costs at Circuit ShCity. I can say that this is what the new millieum of post-punk should sound like. Before I pass final judgement on it, I want to listen to it a couple more times, but all signs are pointing to a thumbs up. Musically, I'd say that they are kind of like The Strokes, if The Strokes were British and 10 years younger. The lyrics which I haven't had time to digest fully are supposed to be one of the band's strengths. Lyricly they are the non-hip-hop version of Mike Skinner/The Streets, and there is a bogus internet rumor circulating that Jim Bob from Carter USM wrote all their words. If that isn't a good enough reason to pick up this album, maybe long song titles such as "Red Light Indicates Doors Are Secured," "Perhaps Vampires Is a Bit Strong But..," and "You Probably Couldn't See For the Lights But You Were Staring Straight At Me" might persuade you. This is the present. I fear that as they grow up rich and famous, they won't be able to make another album like this. I guess there's the hope that there will always be another bunch of naïve immature kids to come along and make a genius, all stars aligned, pop album about the importance of being the naïve immature youth. The Se x Pistols and the Streets did it, and is it much too soon to expect it to happen again here? Either way it is enjoyable.
Movie Club:
I'm breaking the first rule of our so-called 'movie club;' I'm talking about movies. On St. Patrick's day, I celebrated by watching 'V For Vendetta.' In true Irish fashion, it involves hating the English who in turn hate the Americans and themselves. It was quite enteraining. I'd love to see it on IMAX, but according the IMAX website, the closest place to see it would be in King Of Prussia, PA. That can't possibly be right. Can it? Anyhow, I suggest that you spend your hard earned money and go see it too. I don't want to spoil it, but the hero is a terr0rist. There's two problems I have with this movie, but I won't tell you if you haven't seen the film yet. (Check the vgly blog comments for the problems.) Regardless, go see it. Now. Run. Before it gets censored or banned.
Soundtrack Day Was Yesterday:
"V For Vendetta" and "LOST" each had soundtrack CD's released yesterday. The local Circuit ShCity said that they are too small to get every new release, and they had neither. Idiots. As a person who deals with inventory, let me say that they LOST a sale. I went to Best Buy and got the "LOST" disc. I didn't buy the "V" disc. Maybe later. Anyway, Best Buy had over a half dozen copies of both soundtracks. Unfortunately, the LOST disc only has highlights from Michael Giacchino's score. There is none of Charlie's or Driveshaft's music, no old country, and none of Hurley's discman songs. There is no dialog either, but that isn't that big of deal. Like the bootleg version, I downloaded awhile ago, this disc only contains music from the first season, but the bootleg version is better. Hopefully, another legit disc will come out after the current season highlighting all of the non-score music. I won't spoil it for those of you that haven't started the second season, but I can say that there's a lot more music to look forward to. Note that if you aren't done the first season, do NOT read the song names. Like the Star Wars Episode I soundtrack did, this soundtrack indicates a character's death in one of the songs' titles. The difference here is The Phantom Menace soundtrack came out a full couple of weeks before the movie and you should be done watching the first season of LOST by now. (Alert: New episode tonight! New episode tonight!)
Most St. Patrick's Day themed LOST song title that isn't about a character's death: "Shannonigans"
V Highlight: "Bird Gerhl" by Antony & the Johnsons
I make animals:
Speaking of Antony and movies, I saw "Animal Factory" directed by Steve Beschemi staring Willem Dafoe and Ed Furlong. The movie was really good. Ed pretty much plays himself, a kid from a good family that becomes a druggie inmate. (or is it convict? According to the movie either the word 'inmate' or 'convict' is considered derogatory. I don't remember which it is, and I don't want to offend any of our fine upstanding prison-folk, because they scare me.) Willem, another prisoner, basically runs the place, and takes Ed under his wing. Anyway, Antony in his only scene basically plays himself, a singing "gerhlie-man." Micky Rourke is in it too, and he was amazing. It took me half the movie to even realize that it was him. That dude looks so plastic. It's amazing. Thank goodness for movies like this and "S1n City" or he wouldn't act anymore.
Chef Gave South Park the Shaft:
Isaac Hayes (he's a bad mutha… shut your mouth) has quit South Park. Why? He doesn't have a problem poking fun a Christanity or Judism, but he gets offended when the show deals with his personal beliefs Scientology. I guess he's not that bad of a mutha. I'd think that he only likes busting on real religions, but that whole da-dumb gold tablets in the hat episode disproves that theory. If you don't know what I'm talking about, think Utah.
Fantasy Ice Hockey:
Oh, and I've fallen to 3rd place in the fantasy hockey league. Gary is in 1st place. He made 46 roster moves to get there. He really wants his trophy back. Matt is in 2nd place. He has made no roster moves at all. Akshay has overtaken Danny by 5 and a half points for the cellar. Most impressive.
Kick it!

'V' problem #1:
Did V really have to lock Evie up? Come on.
'V' problem #2:
Where did all of the Guy Fawkes masks come from? After the TV station invasion, you'd think that the government would destroy and/or monitor the plant that made them.
Also, didn't the 'V' spraypainting in 'V For Vendetta' remind you a lot of the 'V' graffitti in the old TV show 'V' with the aliens? That show was cool. I liked Hamm.
mmmm... Ham.
