Garey in Columbus - Who woulda thunk it?

Football:
Gee, I didn't see this coming:
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=2298135
Imagine what would have happened to the ref had the Steelers lost.
Also, some Pittsburgher had a heart attack when Jerome Bettis fumbled. If he hadn't been in a bar with a bunch of firefighters, he might have died. Anyway when the guy woke up in the hospital, his first words were "did we win?"

TV:
I am the only one who watches "The Boondocks" on the Cartoon Network's [adult swim]? If so, I am better than the rest of you. It is great, and you have to respect Aaron McGruder, a guy who actually has a career despite going to the University of Maryland.

Mvsix:
Speaking of [adult swim] I just bought DangerDoom's "The Mouse and the Mask" CD. DangerDoom is Danger Mouse (producer of the illeagal Beatle/Jay-Z "Grey Album" and Gorillaz fame) and MF Doom (underground hip-hop producer and rapper.) "MF" does not stand for what you think. It is "Metal Face" or "Metal Fingers" depending on whether he is rapping or producing. For the longest time I thought MF Doom was one of Kool Keith's many personas, but it isn't. Back to "The Mouse and the Mask," Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Space Ghost, and the other [adult swim] characters are all over this album. I only watch "Futurama," "The Boondocks," "Robot Chicken," "Cowboy Be-bop," and "Evangelion," (insert praise for TiVo here) but the "Harvey Birdman Attorney At Law" track on the album sounds so cool, I might start watching that. You can legally download two of the DangerDoom tracks here:
http://www.adultswim.com/downloads/index.html?CN_movieType=mp3s

Back to Maryland:
Add soccer player Jason Garey to the list of Unversity of Merlin allumni that went on to slightly bigger and better things. He was drafted third overall by the Columbus Crew of the MLS "Super Draft" that was held in Philly last Friday. He was one of 4 Terps taken in the "Super Draft." (What's so super about it?)

(In no particular order)
U of MD Twerp success stories:
Shawne Merriman (San Diego Chargers)
Connie Chung (Marty Povich's lucky wife)
Jim Henson (AKA Kermit)
Valarie Solanas (shot Andy Warhol)
Taylor Twellmen (MLS MVP)
The Virgin Mary (the college's and state's namesake)
Merlin (the college's and state's other namesake)
Aaron McGruder (Revolutionary)
Juan Dixon (well, he's a borderline success)
Chris Wilcox (he's leaning toward mediocre again)
Gary Williams (well, he left UMD & came back)
Ralph "I'm not William 'the Refridgerator' Perry" Friegen (left and came back too)
Velocity Girl (RIP)
Donnatello from the Teenage Mutant Ninja Terps (AKA the cool turtle)
Boomer Essisen (Semi-gifted quarterback, not even semi-gifted commentator)
Steve Francis (jury is still out)
Len Bias
Joe Smith (Well, at least he is rich.)
The dude who started Under Armour (Does he have a name?)
Mike Tice
Allen Iverson (Oops, that was Georgetown)
Lebron James (Oh yeah. He's too cool for school)
Me
Remember to fear the turtle

Mvsix:
Definitely everybody's favorite Go-Go:
Regardless of whether heaven is a place on earth or not, Jane Wiedlin, not Belinda Carlise, is everybody's fave Go-Go even if I can never remember her name.

I comepletely forgot that she was Joan of Arc in "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure." Her best role was the singing telegram girl in "Clue." She sung 5 words and then was shot. Cool.

Mvsix:
Placebo - "Meds"
Placebo's upcoming album called "Meds" has been leaked on the web. I tried to download it, but there were problems involving a lack of disc space on my personal machine. When I got around to trying it again, all of sources were terminated due to the internet police. It's not like I won't buy it. Michael Stipe guests on one track. I bet it's good. At least, it has gotta be a million times better than getting that Justin Warfield to "rap" on a track.

TV Show Being Released on DVD:
The Electric Company best of 4 DVD set. It's about time.

TV:
Is Carnivale on DVD yet? Not that I'll buy it, but if enough do maybe it will be resurrected by HBO.

The new HBO show coming out is staring Bill Paxton as a polygamist. One of his wifes is Chloe (with a umlat) Sevigny from "Kids," "American Psycho," & "The Last Days of Disco." I couldn't make this up. Maybe I could, but now I don't need to.

Movies that I'm excited for:
V Is For Vendetta
X-Men 3
The Watchmen (who knows when this will ever be started)
Ender's Game (ditto)

Is your dad a dealer 'cause you're dope to me?

Mvsic:
http://www.schoolofprasad.com/papers/gauri/Arular%20(2005)/
MIA - URAQT
Can anybody name a better tune about text-messaging performed by a daughter of a Sri Lanken freedom fighter (or terrorist depending on who you talk to)? Even if you can, I bet that it doesn't sample Quincy Jones' "Sanford & Son" theme and Red Fox saying "You big dummy!" Early American versions of M.I.A.'s Arular didn't contain this track because they couldn't get the sample cleared in time. Arular was the best album of the year according to dumb Blender mag, and off the top of my head I can't think of a better one. Neil Diamond's Rick Rubin produced album 12 Songs was pretty good though. Yes, seriously. It is a misnomer though, because it has 14 songs on it.

Sport:
It's January, and that means it is time to think about baseball. I'm sure you are all excited about the upcoming World Cup Of Baseball Classic Championship (or whatever they are calling it.) This should be good. South Africa has a team, but they don't actually have any baseball fields in their country. Same with Italy. I wonder if Wales was invited. If games were won by the number of high rate catchers your team fields, then Puerto Rico would win, but it isn't. If games were won based on pure skill and athleticism, then the Dominican Republic would win. Skill and athleticism should only get you to 2nd place, because games are won in the labs by the players with the least detectable steroids, and we all know that the US doctors are way ahead in that category. Wait, isn't Puerto Rico owned by the US anyway? Why aren't they a state yet, and how come each state doesn't get their own team like the Little League World Series?

Oh, and even though Castro said that any money made by Cuban team would be donated to Hurricane Katrina victums, the US won't let them play. Maybe if they took Rafael Palmero back Elian Gonzalez-style, that would sweeten the deal.

If I'm reading this correctly, the Koreans plan on playing a dozen pitchers and nobody will play outside of the infield dirt. What a cunning stratagem. Let's see if it pays off.

TV:
New LOST tonight. I think it will have Jack flashbacks. If so, that's his third show. I want a NYC Rose and Bernard based episode, but I'm probably in the minority.

Like NWA said "Sue the Police!"

plagorized from http://www.thetailsection.com/:
A group of fans have filed a class action lawsuit against the Oahu Police Department for arresting "Lost" stars Cynthia Watros and Michelle Rodriguez on drunk driving charges. These fans say they're all still watching season 1 on DVD and haven't even gotten to season 2 yet, which is when Cynthia and Michelle's characters are introduced. They say they were all blind-sided by the news that these actors were arrested and they were horrified to hear they were from season two. Their attorney argues, "It was a massive spoiler to reveal these actors are in the show, and we blame the police department for creating such a tragic consequence...They were well aware that thousands of fans were still getting through season 1, and, yet, the irresponsible officers still went ahead with their arrests." They are seeking $350 million in damages for "cruel spoiler activities" and "pain and suffering."

Chris,
Being an esquire bar-passing type worker, what is your professional opinion on the chances of winning $350 million?

Delinquent Past News:
The University of Maryland men's soccer team won the national championship, and one of their players won the Hermann award (the soccer equivilent to the Heisman Trophy.) Good work Garey. I didn't know you played soccer or still went to Maryland. I suppose you'll be playing in the MLS next year. That's gotta beat "real" work.

Current:
Sylvie was hospitialized this weekend for RSV. She had to live in a bubble for a little while, and it was very sad like the Jake Gyllenhaal movie "Bubble Boy." Well, at least I'm guessing that movie was sad; I've never seen it. Nobody has, but I digress. Sylvie's fine now, and I think I made it clear to her that I do not like spending my weekends in the hospital. I like spending my weekends drinking and watching TV. I guess there was no reason that I couldn't have done that at the hospital, but the cheap hospital doesn't have TiVo. Maybe next time we'll go to a good hospital.

The Future and Beyond:
Two hours of LOST tonight. If you don't watch LOST, tonight would be a good day to start, because the first hour is a recap episode promising remind you what has happened since the beginning of the series. How can they put a season and half's worth of info into an hour? I dunno. It's magic or something. I wizard wrote the episode. I dunno. Anyhow, I think the second hour revolves around Mr. Eko (played by Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje.) That dude is tough. He was in HBO's Oz and survived.
Apparantly Big Spaceship is a media company that did:

That gives further validity to the insanity at www.bigspaceship1.com

Fantasy Hockey:

Now that I am back in first place I thought that this would be a good time update everybody. That was a scary week or so when Matt was in first place.
Team: MVP so far:
1 Timrå IK - Danny Heatley (He's a lot more valuable this season since he isn't in jail. Huh, Heidi?)
2 TheDevils (Matt) - Ilya Kovalchuk (Stayed in Russia a couple of weeks into the season. I wish he had stayed there longer & so does Sidney Crosby.)
3 Yorkie Terrors - Marc Savard (61 points. Nuff said.)
4 Blue Meanies - Rookies Marek Svatos & Sidney Crosby (Neither will win the Rookie of the Year award though. Thank you Alexander Ovechkin)
5 Pandit Bandits - Peter Forsberg (is probably the best player in the world again. I wish he wasn't on Philly.)
6 Rosemary's Babies - Eric Staal (without him, the Hurricanes would be in last place in the Southeast, not the Capitols.)
7 NJDevils (Chris) - Manny Legace (15 wins, 5 losses, & a 0.920 save percentage. Good goalies are hard to find now that the league encourages lots of goals.)
8 Yes I Have No Banana - Daniel Alfredsson (59 points & a plus 26 including 2 goals & 2 assists last night)
9 Puck - Jaromir Jagr (I shouldn't have traded him back to you, not that it seems to have
mattered to either of us.)

Mvsic:
Dntel - (This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan On this site you will find two remixes of that song to legally download.
http://www.epitonic.com/artists/dntel.html
Dntel is Jimmy Tamborello (AKA James Figurine, AKA part of the band Strictly Ballroom, and most importantly AKA half of The Postal Service). I haven't listened to these mixes yet, but I have heard the original version and a different remix. This particular Dntel track includes Ben Gibbard (AKA lead for Death Cab For Cutie AKA the other half of The Postal Service) on vocals, but I think the Safety Scissors remix mixed Ben right out of the song. The Postal Service performed this song regularly when they toured. As a matter of fact, I believe that this was the last song that the Postal Service played live before going back to their "primary" bands. So in many ways it is a Postal Service song. Will the Postal Service reform? My magic 8 ball says "Outlook Good," but then again, the 8 ball said that the Twerps basketball team will certainly beat Duke tonight, and we all know that ain't happening. 8 balls just aren't as reliable as they used to be.
